Delete CML
Permanently remove a Corrosion Measurement Location (CML) and all its associated thickness history from an asset record in SHIELD.
Overview
Use this guide to delete a CML that is no longer needed. Deletion is permanent and removes the CML record along with all historical thickness readings associated with it. This directly affects the corrosion rate and remaining life calculations for the parent component.
Deleting a CML cannot be undone. All thickness measurement history recorded against this CML will be permanently deleted. This data cannot be recovered after confirmation.
If you need to retain the measurement history, consider editing the CML to update its details rather than deleting it. If the CML needs to be moved to a different component, reassign it via Edit CML before proceeding.
Before You Delete
| Check | Action if True |
|---|---|
| CML has historical thickness readings you need to keep | Do not delete — edit or reassign the CML instead |
| CML is referenced in open inspection tasks | Close or reassign those tasks before deleting |
| Deletion is needed to correct a data entry error | Confirm no valid readings are attached before proceeding |
Steps
Navigate to the Asset and Open CML Editing Mode
Go to the asset containing the CML you want to delete. Click the edit icon on the CMLs header to enter CML editing mode and unlock the table.

Click the Delete Icon for the CML
Locate the CML you want to remove — confirm using the CML ID and description before proceeding. Click the delete icon for that row. A confirmation prompt will appear before the deletion is finalized.

Confirm the Deletion
Review the confirmation prompt carefully. Clicking Confirm will permanently delete the CML and all associated thickness history. If you have not yet completed the checks above, click Cancel and do so before proceeding.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Delete icon not visible | CML editing mode not activated | Click the edit icon on the CMLs section header first |
| CML still showing after deletion | Page not refreshed | Refresh the asset record to confirm the CML has been removed |
| Need to recover deleted thickness readings | Deletion cannot be undone | Contact your administrator to confirm whether backup or audit log options are available |
| Corrosion rate changed unexpectedly after deletion | Thickness history removed from component calculation | Review remaining CML readings on the component to verify the calculated rate is still valid |
